On 10th February 2002, Kingsley Rickard, Vice Chairman of The Trevithick Society visited Merthyr Tydfil and brought with him a model of the replica of Richard Trevithick’s Camborne Road Locomotive. The photographs depict Kingsley with the model at Cyfarthfa Museum.

PRELIMINARY PROPOSALS

Detailed preparations are still in their early stages and are subject to the availability of finance.  However, a number of provisional dates have been agreed so that detailed planning can commence and so that prospective visitors can reserve the dates:

September 2003: Launch of souvenir Calendar (details soon)

Early 2004: Launch of special commemorative stamps and £2 coin.

Saturday 21st February 2004 (the actual anniversary date):
Anniversary walk along part of route.
Celebration Gala Evening, Cyfarthfa Castle.
Naming of EWS locomotive at Merthyr Station.
Terrence Cuneo “Penydarren” painting on display at Cyfarthfa Museum (until September)

June to October 2004: Replica “Penydarren locomotive” on display at Brecon Mountain Railway.

It is planned that the main celebration events will  take place during an expanded Merthyr Tydfil Heritage Festival from 1st to 11th July 2004. On the 3rd/4th July it is hoped to feature as many of the Trevithick replica engines as possible.

Saturday 3rd July 2004: Exhibits gather at Cyfarthfa Park
    Ynysowen Carnival & Parade, Aberfan

Sunday 4th July 2004: Transport Street Festival, Merthyr Tydfil Town Centre
  Steam Car Club of Great Britain annual road run.

Sunday 11th July 2004: Vintage Vehicle Event, Cyfarthfa Park

Dates to be confirmed: Trevithick Musical, Green Roadshow (Troedyrhiw), Model Railway Event (Cyfarthfa Park), touring Steam Exhibition.

August Bank Holiday 2004
Merthyr Show at Cyfarthfa Park with Transport theme.
OTHER PROJECTS:

Subject to obtaining finance, it is proposed to develop the remaining sections of tramway into a trail from Merthyr to Abercynon. Information panels will be erected as strategic points throughout the route and three old bridges renovated.

It is proposed to open up a section of the Plymouth Tunnel (known locally as “Trevithick’s Tunnel”) and provide informative displays.

The possibility of steam hauled trains from Cardiff is being actively pursued.
